For many years I have always wanted to live a fulfilled life. This, meaning living a purpose focussed life. Over the years I have learned that life is not one dimensional and life cannot be boxed. If I were to ask you right now what your life’s purpose is? Would you be able to give me an answer right away or would you need to think about it first? Either way, whether it takes you a split second to answer that question or a week to figure it out, what should be important to both you and I is for us to know our life’s purpose.
I remember when my friend and I went away for his birthday trip (I told you I like traveling and new experiences. I can testify to this; traveling does not need to be expensive). We traveled to Mozambique by bus. It was inexpensive and quite convenient since it was just the 2 of us. We stayed in the Capital city of Mozambique, Maputo. It is believed that my forefathers were born in Mozambique, this probably explains why I am drawn to this beautiful country.
The purpose of the trip was to celebrate my friend’s birthday, and being away from our everyday surroundings seemed ideal, so we explored the thought of going to another country, still close enough for us to get there by bus. The only challenging thing about bus trips is that you cannot be singing out loud to your favourite music. Consideration for other people is key.
In one of the days that we were there, we decided to visit one of the markets, it was a walking distance from the hotel we stayed at. Having arrived at the market, we were stunned by the creativity that the people of Mozambique ooze. I love visual art, I was confused on which painting to purchase, but we eventually did buy a few and other artistic items. We each found items that would be fitting for both our places. The items had to match the colour schemes and what each of our homes represented. The stall owners had a plan and purpose to sell their products and we also had our own. Some tried to convince us to purchase items we did not need, nor know what they are for. The market happened to the best place to spend the day.
Having spent the day at the market after our purchases, one wonders how easy it is for us to fall into the trap of serving a purpose that is neither yours nor mine. The determination of the stall owners to sell their products to every tourist was so amazing that they never got tired of trying to sell us everything each stall had. We cannot blame them, their plan and purpose was/is to sell everything. What mattered was whether we knew our purpose for visiting the market.
Most of the time we had to say NO to the things that we did not have any intention of buying, let alone knowing what they were for. How many times have you and I fall into serving a purpose that is neither yours nor mine? This is probably happening because we are not strong-willed, or we do not have a clear picture of what our purpose is.
I dare ask these questions; Do I know what my purpose is? Do you know what your purpose is? Do we have a clear picture of what our purposes look like? How do we find ourselves serving a purpose that is not ours or a purpose that has nothing to do with us and where we hope to be in the future?
Stay on course in fulfilling your purpose for the season you are in. How should you and I avoid drifting away from serving our purposes?
I am here to learn and to refresh others,
