Happy Birthday Thembisile Duma. What does your birthday mean to you?

It has been said time and time again that at birth, we were born with gifts clinched in our hands and as we grew older, we let go of the gift only holding on to a few. These are gifts that are supposed to change the course of time and impact the lives of many.

Well, birthdays are meant to celebrate our lives and how far we have come. It is only when we reflect on our traveled roads that we realized that we have overcome so much, and these are obstacles we might not have thought we would overcome at the time but we did. Birthdays are meant to make us realize how much of winners we are. We are conquerors, which is what we need to say to ourselves as we celebrate the new year that we have been afforded.

Birthdays are a reminder that we have been given the newness of life and every day is a new opportunity to live it up. The newness of life could mean a lot of things to a lot of people and us, it means rediscovering yourself. Unbecoming to become. Getting rid of all that weighs you down and holding on to all that which uplifts you.

Like a new-born baby whose hands are clinched to their God-given gifts, we are to hold on to the light of our lives and the gifts we have. While we also make it a point to rediscover all the gifts we have given up along the road. Letting go of all the self-limiting beliefs that we have adopted and made them our own as we grew older and embracing all that which causes us to fly.

Like babies, who believe that all things are possible. Lira the songstress expresses this notion so beautifully in her song “heart of a child”
