Do not incubate thoughts that cause you anxiety
I read a quote that said, “do not walk around thinking and believing that it is alright to be anxious all the time”, and after reading that quote, I thought to myself, wow, that is actually true, we surely should not be walking around thinking and believing that it is alright for us to be anxious all the time. We need peace in our minds and souls. It is so easy to think such thoughts when you have just read a quote that you believe to be quite amazing. Then comes the practical side of life, and all that which you have just read is suddenly forgotten. What causes us to forget the things or rather principles that would ideally help us when anxiety strikes at us? How do we not incubate the thoughts that cause us anxiety?
Do not own anxiety
Have you ever found yourself in moments that left you thinking that you have no way out and all that is happening at the time is all that will persist for eternity? In truth, we know that moments that leave us speechless do pass and become a thing of the past, yet we still find ourselves very anxious to a point of seeing no way out. The truth is none of us want to experience anxiety. It is not a pleasant state to be in. It is heavy and it has a way of convincing us that we are stuck in that moment for life. We do however need to see ourselves independent of that unpleasant moment. Easier said than done, I am well aware of that. We need to train ourselves to live in moments but never owning them. Do you think owning unpleasant moments could be one of the reasons we find ourselves not seeing any possibility of exiting unpleasant situations? How do you not own something that is currently happening to you right now? (I would also ask). Let us all ponder on this; do I incubate and nurse unpleasant moments all the time? Do I incubate thoughts that cause me anxiety?
Our thoughts
I do not want to sound like I underestimate people’s ability to think for themselves. What do we think will happen should we all start taking control of our thought life? Our thoughts govern our lives and if this is truly the case, then when we incubate thoughts that cause us anxiety, we are essentially giving anxiety permission to govern our lives. Think of the moments when you experienced anxiety, and what thoughts were being entertained at the time. Do you often find yourself thinking about thoughts that leave you fatigued, leaving you uninterested in life’s activities? We need to be in control of our thoughts and be able to give them direction.
Reflections
How many of us have owned anxiety, stress, and all by saying “my anxiety”? Do you think you are in control of your thought life? When last did you evaluate the way you think? Have you considered how you end with an uncontrollable thought? Do you often stop yourself from thinking good about yourself? What comes easy to you, thinking thoughts that leave you anxious or thoughts that leave joyful?
