Pressure Series: Pressure to live it up.

Itumeleng Mzimba - Neo ZUlu

In today’s ever so changing world, life has presented us with so many options. We have so much to choose from that we take some of life’s opportunities for granted. We love having the idea of having more. Well, is having more a bad thing? I do not know, what do you think. Who do we live it up for?

Fashion has always been there, and the world and its inhabitants have always come up with new trends. These are trends that may be appreciated by some, while others find them not so interesting. Whether we appreciate it or not, we are wearing clothes that were influenced by fashion. It might have been in the 1950s or current, fashion will forever be part of our lives.

Realize how we may go out of our way to look good when invited to attend a wedding or an A-lister party versus how we could be in worn-out sweatpants and a freebee t-shirt when we are just sitting at home. Thembisile Duma wrote an article about how what we wear affects our personalities. Well, in most cases we behave differently when we are relaxed at home in sweatpants versus when we are at an A-lister party.

Fair enough, we want to present ourselves properly and that is well accepted, and some may argue that is how it should be. A question may then arise, who do we look presentable for? Is it for ourselves or to be accepted by others? Consider the many time you and I simply did not want to leave the house because we just did not look the part. In the same breath, yet we were comfortable being in sweatpants just a few hours ago while we were sitting in our comfortable spaces. Who is most important in our lives that we should dress up for?

When we live it up, whether it is by dressing up good or any other way, who do we do it for? Let’s take a moment to also think about the reasons why we are doing it. When we put pressure on ourselves to live it up, is it for ourselves or others? How has putting pressure on ourselves helped us grow and how have we harnessed that growth?

Who do we live it up for?
