  • Goal setting series 2 – Do we really have to be realistic?

How would you define purpose? What purpose are your goals serving? These are the questions I believe each of us needs to answer on our own. You and I need to constantly figure out what is currently important to us, lest we lose focus of what we deem as important. How many times have we set goals and halfway through the line we forget about these goals, give up on them without any alternative goals in mind?

Goal distractors.

I have had goals that were inspired by other people. You know, having looked at the things they have achieved, their way of life and without wishing for what they have, I have had to ponder on my way of life, how effective was I in what seemed like my norm. There are times when you and I have set goals that seemed impossible to reach. I have had to ask myself this question “why do I think this is impossible to reach?”

“For as long as we are alive, we will always experience fear and doubt, but it is upon us to overcome these. Recognize the source of these and ponder on whether they will take you to where you want to be or cripple you and cause you to remain stagnant” – Itumeleng Mzimba

Our disbelief in ourselves is the number one reason why we tend to think we are not good enough to attain the things we want to attain. The notion that we have to be realistic had somewhat caused us to quit pursuing our goals before we could even start. See, being realistic pretty much means that we need to look at our circumstances and based on them decide whether or not we qualify to reach or achieve our goals. What most of us do not know is whether our realities agree with us or not we can, and we will achieve what we want. Start by creating a new reality in your mind. Start with the end in mind.

How have we gotten distracted from reaching our goals in the past? Allow me to assume that we have had goals that we got distracted from and eventually stopped pursuing. Could the lack of preparing a conducive environment for our goals become our lives reality be the reason for not achieving our goals? The same way we wash our bedding for us to enjoy sleep should be the same way we prepare for our goals to best achieve them.

What does our reality look like currently? Is it conducive enough to have our goals birthed the way we want? How are we ensuring that our reality complies with our goals? You and I need to constantly reframe our minds to see what we want achieved. If most of us had to consider our current realities as a measure for setting goals, we would probably not even bother having goals set.

Again, I ask, do we need to be realistic to set goals? Has being realistic ever giving anyone greatness? Are we aware of what distracts us from achieving them?

We need to prepare a conducive environment for our goals.
