Anxiety Part Seven: Fashion Reflections

I’ve been thinking about how my love for shopping started. The young naive me fresh from Tertiary. I was excited about my new job and I had no responsibilities. I was in a relationship that was complicated (I’m pretty certain many can relate – Can you relate?). I opened my first clothing account and had a crazy credit limit. Whenever I would fight with my boyfriend, I’d go straight to the shopping mall for some retail therapy😂, Crazy right? You know what’s crazier? The insane money I had to pay back on those accounts, obviously with interest. The joke was on me at the end of the day😂. This taught me such a valuable lesson that when you have issues you have to handle them like an adult and communicate. No amount of clothes can ever fill a void, and this is a lesson I had to learn the hard way, as I’d receive calls from creditors wanting their money back😅and I guess these are the lessons most of us had to go through. Today I don’t even have a single clothing account. I closed all of them and it felt like a ton of bricks had been lifted off my shoulders.

Imagine the decision I made to go shopping simply because someone else had made me upset, and I went shopping to “cool off”, spending the money I did not have. My decision to go shopping seemed great at the time however when I look at the bigger picture, it was not so great because I had to pay back the money with interest.

What are the decisions that we make when we are upset that leave us with a deficit at the end of the day? Have we ever considered what causes us to decide on things that will not benefit us at the end of the day? We need to consider our state of being anxious and revisit the decisions we made that could have led us to a state of anxiousness.

The decisions we make today have a direct impact on our mental, emotional and physical state tomorrow.

We do not decide on joy, but we decide on our priorities which then becomes the results of our joy – Fortune V Matshete
