I generally would like to believe that almost every person who visits my blog, regularly or otherwise are people who seek to better themselves in one way or the other. Are you looking at bettering yourself? Well, either way, please permit me to sow a seed of betterment in your mind. I remember hearing one guy say, “as a person you can only get better” and I could not agree more. Are you aware of the areas in your life that need improvement? It is amazing how we live each day hoping for it to be better than the previous day and honestly, we should hope for better latter days. Why I never want to face my ugly truth. Neither should you!
What are your eyes for?
I had an unpleasant encounter just a few days ago, and it brought some uncomfortable truth about myself that I do not think I was aware of. This was the self-realization I found myself facing. Generally, I would have called one of my close friends to “chat about it” but not this time around. I found myself processing what I had just discovered about myself and part of me did not appreciate what I had just figured out and I thought, hold up, how did we get here? Aren’t we way past this, and it turned out to be my ugly truth. For a minute, I did not want to believe it. It was a bitter pill to swallow and there was nobody else to swallow it for me but myself. What is that unpleasant truth you possibly know about yourself, but you avoid facing it? How long has it been since you have known about it? Why I never want to face my ugly truth. Neither should you!
Face it and work on it or live with it
There I was with the newly uncovered truth about myself, (Nope, I will not share it with you. It shocked me too – I do not want to put you through that) and I was left with two options, face this truth, and work through it or just let things be and live with it. Well, I chose the former and this is because I am on a journey to bettering myself. I had to ask myself if letting things be as they are will add to me being a better person or not. I guess each of us need to ask ourselves the same question about whatever “ugly truth” we find out about ourselves. Do you know what your ugly truth looks like?
Finding out
One may also ask, but how do I find out what my ugly truth is. Well look, life is not a one-size-fits-all t-shirt. Each person has had a different experience on this. Some of us found out a while ago and we decided not to do anything about it until our minds eventually forgot about it but our subconscious minds will always remember. This is because once the ugly truth has been revealed to us, it will remain in our subconscious minds until we decide to work through it, and until then, our ugly truths will influence part, if not a bigger part of who we are. So, a bit of what daunting exercise we shy away from doing called self-introspection is a necessity here. We need to learn to be honest with ourselves about our truths. No one will be best honest with us except for us. We owe ourselves that much.
Reflection
Here are some questions to help us with facing our ugly truths. How often do you self-reflect? Because self-reflection helps us uncover the things that make us who we truly are and not necessarily what we aspire to be. Just like it is our daily decisions that make us who we are and not what we dream of. It is the things we do and say daily that make us who we are. Is your self-reflection moment your moment of truth and honesty or do you just focus on the lovely parts of your life? In your self-reflection moment, what have you done with the unpleasant truth you found out about yourself? I would like to believe that you have had some things in your life that you did not like and worked through them. How did you manage to face the truth? Can you apply the same strategy even in the cold ugly truth you are either aware of or are yet to uncover?
Are you willing to work through your cold ugly truths or you will just let things be?
