Reasons people avoid talking about money.

Beliefs about money

Money is a sensitive topic for most of us. This is likely influenced by our beliefs about it. In my discussions about money, I do not like to pose myself as a Mr. Know-it-all, I simply stick to our principles about it; and even then, I’m of the opinion that one should not be too certain about it because they might miss important lessons from others. So, what are the reasons people avoid talking about money?

Do you discuss finances in your circle?

I had a discussion with Godfrey following his WhatsApp status about it. It was this status that inspired me to write this article. I felt a need to write about the resource that answers all things, MONEY. Understanding that we were raised differently, and as such have differing ideas and relationships with money. There are those of us who believe in being frugal with our resources while others believe in sparing no penny. Both these groups of people hold special specific ideas about money. Are you aware of your beliefs about money? What are the reasons we avoid talking about it?

Beliefs about money

How often do you give your beliefs about money attention capital? Have you ever taken a moment to ask yourself why you behave a certain way when you have money and vastly different behave differently when you don’t? I have discussed this phenomenon with different people at different times and have found their beliefs polarising at best. Some believe that money is a scarce resource while others believe that it is abundant and to be found everywhere, and the truth is that neither is wrong. Both beliefs influence whether or not people find themselves in debt

Owe no one nothing but love

Godfrey and I briefly discussed how can people generally get rid of unnecessary debt or just get out of debt altogether. I remember vividly having a conversation with a former acquittance about how I want to be debt-free, and he went on to say “unfortunately, it is impossible to live without debt”. It has been about 3 years; I wonder if he still holds the same beliefs. I believe it is very much possible to live a debt-free life. I want to believe that most of us grew up seeing our parents servicing debt most of the time. Is that how we also want to live?

How do you think your life would be right now if you did not have any debt to pay? What are things you would be able to do effortlessly? Imagine your life without debt and describe to yourself what your life without debt looks like. Does it make you smile or frown? Which reaction would you rather live with?

Reflections

Is your belief about money holding you back or helping you progress? I am not talking about the lovely quotes or confessions about money; I am referring to what you honestly believe about money? Somebody once said to me, “Itumeleng, you need to stop asking triggering questions” and my response was, “Do we then need to stop talking about important factors in our lives on the basis that somebody will be triggered? Aren’t triggering questions meant to help us grow and be better. Face that which we avoid dealing with or our weaknesses?”
