Because traveling has become one of those excursions I love engaging in, it does not matter where the destination is, near or far, let’s just get on the road and see the world. We cannot think we are clued up about the world when all we know is in-fact 10 city blocks. I vowed to myself that I will expose myself to the rest of the world, to see and learn how other people live and thrive.

So here I was, fresh from my birthday trip. I have mixed emotions about my birthday trip which I will write about later. I received a call from a friend of mine, Nah, let me rephrase, from my brother, who was on his biking road trip. This was a call that would change my plans of being indoors for the weekend to recover from my 10-day birthday trip. Am I the only one who would have plans to just be indoors, and being indoors would be the plan? All I remember was him saying “Let’s go on a road trip, pack we are coming to pick you up”. Needless to say, I asked no further questions, because I am a liker of things. After all, we were still in the mood to celebrate our birthdays (we were born in the same month).
The interesting thing about this trip was that Fortune was on his bike and Nkululeko and I were in the car. This was a strange setup, our faces had this question “why are we road-tripping if you are going to be on your bike and have us drive?” But wait, there was more to this road trip, none of us knew this then so we thought, oh well, let’s hit the road and see South Africa.
Smell the African soil, for from it comes life and truths untold – Itumeleng Mzimba
We were heading north of the Limpopo province, South Africa, where we expected the weather to be warm and fuzzy. All I am going to say is we were grateful we had our warm jackets with us as the weather was not friendly with us. As we journeyed, I could not help but notice how free and smooth the bike ride was. How it looked super cool when the road, curved when he went uphill and the likes. Well, of course, we were behind, it was a road trip and not a speeding competition.
What came to mind as I observed how my friend rode his bike, check how free he was to move around and he, being able to ride way ahead of us was because he had no heavy bags with him. He was able to overtake and drive in between cars with ease. It made me realize how we walk around with so much heaviness with hopes to maneuver around life with ease like how bikers would around cars. Let us consider the load you and I are carrying and how heavy it is. How easy would it be for us to get way ahead if we were to give it up?
Both you and I know what we need to offload off our backs, that one thing that brings heaviness and slows us down from getting ahead. How willing are we to get ahead? How willing are we to give up the things that slow us down from getting ahead? Do we have the courage to give up the things the weigh us down?
