Anxiety Part One: Broken Sculpture

About a year ago I moved into a new office. Well, the office was very dull, and blend and it had no character, none whatsoever. The first thing I did was to have the office painted white. I wanted an office space that had meaning, a story. I wanted every part and piece in my office to tell a story.

As the days went by in my new office space, I started looking for art pieces, from second-hand shops and also new artwork from modern artists. This was not the first time I had moved into a new office that needed me to add a bit of myself to it, so it felt personal. It is a different experience every time to add a personal touch to your working space. I mean, this was going to be a place that I spend more of my time at and it had to at the very least, have a bit of character.

So, in my quest for finding great artwork, I stumbled upon a sculpture of what appeared to a father and his daughter, I liked it and I did not think much of it. It was a rejected sculpture and it was being sold at a discounted rate. So, I bought 2 of the same sculptures, the one was still intact and the other was a bit broken, but I thought, hey, I will make it work.

It was only recently that I started paying attention to what this new sculpture could mean to me or any other person. The initial design of the sculpture was of a father and daughter, it represented what seemed to have been a beautiful relationship, however now that I bought it broken, it has a completely different meaning. It now represents a broken father-daughter relationship and it looks like the father is running from this little girl.

As I paid more attention to the sculpture, I asked myself quite several questions about broken relationships and how they could have had an impact on those who have an anxiety challenge. How well do we deal with broken relationships? As the father in the sculpture appears to have been running from this little girl, I continued to ask myself if we just walk away from broken relationships having not dealt with the disappointment that came as a result of the broken relationship, however way we deem it fit to deal with the cause.

Do broken relationships have a direct impact on anxiety? Have we considered that spending too much time wondering what the future will look like without certain people could be the cause of anxiety? Could the sense that those who relations are no more make us anxious because we believe that we will no longer be sharing anything that matters with them?

We don’t decide on joy, but we decide on our priorities which then becomes the result of our joy – VF Matshete

This means that whatever thoughts we are entertaining that cause us to be anxious, we can decide to think different thoughts that will bring us joy.

What thoughts are you thinking that cause anxiety today? And what are the thoughts that you can start thinking today that will bring you joy?

I am here to learn and to refresh others

I love the piece… never thought it had such a strong meaning behind it.

A great read indeed Tums

Hi Tumi

Thank you. Life is not one dimensional, someone might look at the artwork and have different stories about it.
We hope to uncover more elements and thought-provoking questions on the anxiety question.
